Problem statement

Children’s recreational screen time often provides limited educational value, while conventional environmental education may struggle to sustain engagement. An interactive approach is needed to transform gameplay into meaningful, data-driven environmental learning.

Research contribution

EcoRanger translates NASA GLOBE protocols and environmental datasets into interactive educational games. It combines inquiry-based learning, simulations, quizzes, rewards, and expert engagement to teach atmospheric, hydrological, biological, and soil science concepts.

EcoRanger is a gamified environmental learning platform developed by Team EcoRangers for the NASA International Space Apps Challenge 2024. The project became a Global Finalist, placing among the Top 40 teams worldwide.

The platform addresses two connected challenges: increasing recreational screen time among children and the need for engaging environmental science education. Rather than attempting to eliminate gaming, EcoRanger transforms gameplay into an interactive learning experience.

EcoRanger converts NASA GLOBE protocols into child-friendly mini-games covering the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and pedosphere. Players explore air quality, water cycles, soil characteristics, carbon cycles, biodiversity, and environmental data collection through simulations based on real NASA and GLOBE data.

Key features include protocol-based games, environmental quizzes, badges, points, progression levels, global and local environmental maps, and webinar registration. Children can challenge friends, share knowledge, and connect with experts while developing practical environmental awareness.

One of the main design challenges was balancing scientific accuracy with enjoyable gameplay. The team simplified complex environmental processes into intuitive tasks, such as adjusting atmospheric variables and investigating water quality, while retaining alignment with GLOBE protocols.

Future development will incorporate all 40 GLOBE protocols, multiplayer challenges, additional simulations, and real-time global environmental activities. Planned AI-driven personalization will analyze learning activity and provide age-appropriate recommendations for environmentally responsible actions.

EcoRanger ultimately aims to develop environmentally conscious young learners who can apply scientific knowledge to everyday sustainability practices.
